Ángeles Santos Torroella
Coming from the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Tertulia shows four women relaxing and smoking at home, but none of them are communicating with each other. (2) The whole painting is very mysterious and oppressive. (1) The painting by Ángeles Santos Torroell reflects the internal struggle these women went through to find their identity and role in society. Painted in 1929, it shows the oppression of women, who were often forced to stay home, unlike men who were free to socialize in public. (3) The painting is dark and the women are close together which gives the viewer a sense of being trapped. Women during this time where forced into their traditional roles, kept out of the work force, denied the right to vote, and education. Tertulia could have been inspired by La tertulia del café de Pombo by Jose Gutierrez Solana, (2) in the sense that it is the antecedent, containing only stiff men sharing drinks in a public place. Although similarly to Tertulia the men in La tertulia del café de Pombo are illusive and not sharing communication.
